2021 HIPA Race Results


Pa'akai Paddles (December)
The the second 2021 Pa'akai Paddles race was held a Honokohau Harbor on a stormy day.  Heavy rains before the race gave way to overcast skies with a moderate northwest swell.  The long course was 7+ miles to the jet ski island and back and the short course was 4 miles to Kaiwi point and back to the harbor.  Nathan Grocholski JR and Kekoa Kau won the long course in their OC-2.  Ali'i Youderian was the first men's OC-1 and Christina Kovach was the first women's OC-1 to finish the long course.  Nathan Grocholski and Oliver Powers won the short course in an OC-2.  Loren Sellers was the first men's OC-1 and Alana Cabatu was the first women's OC-1 on the short course.



Beanie Heen
The 2021 Beanie Heen Memorial race was held at Pua Ka`ilima Cultural Surf Park at Kawaihae, HI  on a sunny day with light winds.  Safety concerns due to a modest swell, caused the course to be altered to begin inside the harbor and head north to a turn and then back to finish inside.   Derek Park and Avon Makoa were the first to finish the 7+ mile long course in their OC-2.  Keakua was the first in Men's OC-1 and Darcy Daniel was the first Women finisher in an OC-1.  Charlie Becerra and Jude Daniels finished first in the 3+ mile short course in an OC-2.  Martin Free was the first men's OC-1 and Uilani Macavio was the first women's OC-1 in the short course.



Abbott Galaher Seaman
The 2021Abbott Galaher Seaman Memorial race was held at Keauhou Canoe Club on a beautiful day with light winds.  The short course and long course were both run straight offshore and returned to Keauhou Bay.  Kai Gonzalez and Avan Makoa won the long course in their OC-2.  Randall Perez Jr was the first men's finisher, and Darcy Daniel was the first women's finisher.  Albert Lee was the first man to finish the short course, Toni and Kirby Maury were the first OC-2, and Lois Hodges was the first women .



Keokea Invitational

The 2021 Keakoa Invitational race was held at Keokea Park with big wave conditions.  The ~11 mile race ended at the Old Coast Guard Station but paddlers had to go to Kapa'a or Mahukona to get out of the water.  Kainoa Tanoai was the first overall finisher, Avan Makoa was the first junior, and Kristin Old was the first women. 



Yamagata Challenge

The 2021 Yamagata Challenge race was held at Honokohau Harbor under mostly calm conditions. The short course was 10 miles and the long course was 14 miles. The long course was won by Steve Berengue and Keakua Nolan in an OC2.  Jose Lizardi was the first mens single in an OC1 and Laura Birse was the first women's in her V1.  In the short course Ali'i Youderian was first overall and Darcy Daniel was the first women's single finisher.   Charles Becerra and Scott Ferry were the first double finisher and Ramona Crivello and  Tiapepe Ulufaleilupe were the first women’s OC2 finishers. 



Surf Park Race

The 2021 Surf Park race was a beautiful Kawahaie day with some slight overcast and light on shore winds. The short course was 8 miles and the long course was 10 miles. In the short course Keahi Warfield was first overall surf ski finisher with Ali’i Youderian first OC1 and Tiapepe Ulufaleilupe the first women’s finisher. Kainoa Tanoai was the first overall/OC1 finisher and Kristen Old was the first women’s finisher for the long course. 



East Hawaii Challenge

The 11th annual East Hawaii Challenge was held March 27th at Waterfront Park under partly clear skies, an increasing breeze, and moderate waves.  The 7ish mile short course was finished first by the Ali'i Youderian on a OC-1, Kim Beyer, John Rodrgues finished as the first OC-2 team, and Susan Anderson was the first single women's finisher on an OC1.  The 11ish mile long course was won by the Jose Lizardi, and the first single women's finisher was Kristin Old.



Kuuipo Race

The Kuuipo Race was held March 20th at Keauhou Canoe under clear skies, a light breeze, and small waves.  The 6 mile short course was finished first by the Keahi Warfield on a surfski, and Tiapepe Ulufaleilupe was the first single women's finisher on an OC1.  The 9 mile long course was won by the OC2 team of Hunter Anderson, Ian Foo, the first single men's finisher was Jose Lizardi, and the first single women's finisher was Kristin Old.



Freddie Berengue Memorial Race

The Freddie Berengue Memorial Race was held March 6th at Honokohau Harbor under mostly clear skies, a light breeze, and small waves.  The 5+ mile short course was finished first by the OC2 team of Paul Jeffries and Alex Siquerios,  Ali'i Youderian was the first single men's finisher, and Ramona Crivello was the first single women's finisher.  The 8 mile long course was won by the OC2 team of Steve Berengue and Keakua Nolan, the first single men's finisher was Chase VonNordheim, and the first single women's finisher was Darcy Daniel.



Uncle Louis Kelekolio Memorial Race

The Uncle Louis Kelekolio Memorial Race was held February 27th by the Keōua Hōnaunau Canoe Club under clear blue skies and a moderate breeze.  The 6 mile short course was finished first by the OC2 team of Charlie Becerra and Scott Ferry,  Ali'i Youderian was the first single men's finisher, and Ramona Crivello was the first single women's finisher.  The 9+ mile long course was won by the OC2 team of Bruce Ayau and Bill Morris, the first single men's finisher was Jose Lizardi, and the first single women's finisher was Kristin Old.



Kaipalaoa Race

The Kaipalaoa Race for the benefit of OSMD Hawai'i Foundation was run Saturday under overcast skies and near calm conditions.  The courses were shortened to kokua the koho.la (humpback whales) that were gathered in large numbers just out side Hilo Bay.  The race sponsor pointed out that it is our kuleana to malama pono o ke kai and the fellow creatures that live there.  For these reasons the race courses were shortened and kept inside the breakwater.  The first finisher for the 5 mile long course was the OC2 team of Bruce Ayau and Bill Morris, the first single men's finisher was Chase VonNordheim, and the first women's finisher was Laura Birse.  The first finisher for the 3 mile short course was the OC2 team of Kili'ohu Grant and Mark Grant, the first men's finisher was Charlie Becerra, and the first women's finisher was Kawaipio Kauahi.




Valentines Relay Race

The Valentines Relay Race was held on February 13th at Honokohau Harbor.  The race event included two courses, an 8 mile short course and a 10 mile long course.  The first man to finish the long course was Derek Park and the women's first finisher was Kristin Old.  On the short course, the first men's finisher was Ali'i Youderian and the first women's finisher was Susan Anderson.


Pa'akai Paddles Race

The Pa'akai Paddles Race was held on February 6th at Honokohau Harbor.  The race event included two courses.   The  ~5 mile short course won by Ali'i Youderian a junior racer,  the winning women was Ramona Crivello.  The ~8 mile long course was won by Chase VonNordheim on a V-1,  the winning women was Kristin Old.
